This book lays down the science behind dietary supplements in twelve chapters, divided into two parts. The emphasis is on dietary supplements that improve muscle strength or promote muscle growth.
This book is a translation of my Dutch book Bonds voedingssupplementen, which I have published previously in 2017. The first part of this book introduces the reader to information that forms the foundation for a proper understanding of the science behind dietary supplements. This part consists of the chapters muscle physiology, energy systems, absorption, metabolism and safety, and molecular mechanisms of muscle growth. The second part builds further on this fundamental knowledge. It covers eight different dietary supplements in detail: β-alanine, β-hydroxy β-methylbutyric acid, caffeine, creatine, protein supplements, phosphatidic acid, trimethylglycine, and vitamin D. Several aspects are discussed per dietary supplement, including pharmacokinetic properties, mechanisms of action, clinical outcomes, and safety.
